When you cancel HP Instant Ink, the cartridges HP sent you stop working at the end of your billing period. This guide shows what happens and when, how to cancel, which cartridges your printer can use afterward, and whether Instant Ink is worth keeping, with the cost math.
Quick answer
- When it ends: the cancellation takes effect on the last day of your current billing period. You pay for that last month in full, and there’s no cancellation fee on monthly plans.
- Your cartridges: HP remotely disables the Instant Ink cartridges, even if they still have ink. Unused and rollover pages are lost.
- What to use next: regular HP cartridges work in every printer. Printers without HP+ can also use compatible or remanufactured cartridges, according to HP’s own terms.
- Before you cancel: order replacement cartridges so they arrive before your last billing day.
What happens when you cancel HP Instant Ink
Instant Ink cartridges belong to HP, not to you. They work only while your printer is enrolled, and only in the printer on your account. HP’s Instant Ink terms (last updated April 15, 2025) spell out what happens when you leave:
| What | What happens |
|---|---|
| When the plan ends | On the last day of your current billing period, not the day you cancel (monthly plans) |
| Your last month | Charged in full. HP doesn’t prorate. |
| Unused and rollover pages | Lost. HP gives no refund for them. |
| Instant Ink cartridges in your printer | HP disables them remotely, so they stop printing even with ink left |
| Cancellation fee | None on monthly plans. Yearly plans give a partial refund only within the first 30 days. |
| Paper add-on | Canceled along with the ink plan |
Not printing isn’t canceling: HP’s terms say that removing the cartridges, not printing, or taking the printer offline does not cancel your plan or stop the billing. You have to cancel in your account.
How to cancel HP Instant Ink
HP support agents give these steps in HP’s support forum (2026). HP moves its menus from time to time, so the wording may differ slightly.
- Sign in to your Instant Ink account
Go to instantink.hpconnected.com and sign in with your HP account. Business accounts use admin.hpsmart.com.
- Pick the right printer
Under Overview, check Printer Details and match the serial number to the printer you want to cancel.
- Open your plan
Go to HP Instant Ink > Update Plan, then scroll to Plan Details.
- Cancel
Click Cancel my HP Instant Ink Subscription and follow the prompts. HP emails you a confirmation right away and another at the end of the billing period.
You can also cancel by calling HP customer support. If you only want a break, check your account for a pause option, or drop to the 10-page plan at $1.99 a month.
Do this before your plan ends
- Check whether your printer has HP+
This decides which cartridges you can buy next. See the next section.
- Order replacement cartridges now
Your Instant Ink cartridges stop on your last billing day. Have new ones ready so you’re not stuck mid-job.
- Use your remaining pages
You’re paying for the last month anyway, and rollover pages disappear when the plan ends. Print what you need before then.
- Note your billing date
It’s on your account dashboard. That’s the day the cartridges get turned off.
Can you use compatible cartridges after canceling Instant Ink?
It depends on one thing: whether HP+ was turned on when your printer was set up. HP+ is separate from Instant Ink. Canceling Instant Ink doesn’t remove it.
-
Does your printer’s model name end in “e” (for example, OfficeJet Pro 9015e)?
- No
- Your printer doesn’t have HP+. You can use original HP, compatible or remanufactured cartridges.
- Yes
- Go to question 2.
-
Did you turn on HP+ when you set it up?
- No
- You can use original HP, compatible or remanufactured cartridges.
- Yes, or not sure
- Use original HP cartridges. HP says HP+ requires original HP ink for the life of the printer, and it can’t be turned off. Not sure? Contact us before you order.
HP’s own Instant Ink terms back this up: after you cancel, “for non-HP+ printers, you can use HP original cartridges or third party cartridges that are compatible with your printer.” Our guide to HP “e” printers explains HP+ in more detail.
About HP firmware: many HP printers use “dynamic security,” which can reject cartridges with non-HP chips after a firmware update. Remanufactured cartridges reuse original HP chips, so they tend to be the safer choice. See firmware-safe HP ink cartridges and how to block HP firmware updates.
How to switch from Instant Ink to regular cartridges
- Wait until your plan has ended
Your Instant Ink cartridges keep working until the last day of the billing period. Once they’re disabled, the printer shows a cartridge error.
- Remove every Instant Ink cartridge
Take all of them out, including ones that still have ink. They won’t work again.
- Install new regular cartridges
Use cartridges with the same number your printer takes, such as HP 64 or 64XL. HP support says to use regular cartridges, not Instant Ink ones.
- Turn the printer off and on
Then print a test page. If you still get a cartridge error, see our guide to HP cartridge error messages.
- Recycle the old cartridges
HP asks you to send Instant Ink cartridges back for recycling. Use an HP prepaid envelope if you have one, or HP’s Planet Partners program.
Is HP Instant Ink worth it? The cost math
Instant Ink charges by the page, not by the ink. A full-color photo costs the same as a one-line email. Here are HP’s US monthly plans (hp.com, October 17, 2026):
| Plan | Monthly price | Cost per page if you use every page |
|---|---|---|
| 10 pages | $1.99 | 19.9¢ |
| 50 pages | $5.99 | 12.0¢ |
| 100 pages | $8.49 | 8.5¢ |
| 300 pages | $16.99 | 5.7¢ |
| 700 pages | $32.99 | 4.7¢ |
Extra pages cost $2 per set of 10 to 15 pages. Unused pages roll over, up to 3 times your plan’s monthly pages.
Now compare that with buying your own cartridges. We used the HP 64XL, which fits printers like the HP ENVY Photo 7975 and 7275. The math assumes 80% black pages and 20% color pages at the standard ISO page coverage, the same method as our printer ink cost study.
| Pages a month | HP Instant Ink | Original HP 64XL | Swift Ink remanufactured 64XL |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50 | $5.99 | $6.91 | $2.49 |
| 100 | $8.49 | $13.82 | $4.99 |
| 300 | $16.99 | $41.47 | $14.96 |
| 700 | $32.99 | $96.76 | $34.91 |
What the numbers say:
- Instant Ink beats buying original HP cartridges at every usage level in this comparison.
- Remanufactured cartridges cost less for light and average printing. At 100 pages a month, that’s about $4.99 vs $8.49.
- Instant Ink wins for heavy color and photos. At 700 pages a month it’s slightly cheaper, and photo-heavy printing tilts it further, since every page costs the same.
- Cartridges you buy are yours. They keep working without a subscription, and nothing gets switched off if you stop paying. (HP+ printers still need an internet connection under HP’s terms.)

Frequently asked questions
Is there a fee to cancel HP Instant Ink?
No, not on monthly plans. You pay for the current month in full, and the plan ends on your last billing day. Yearly plans give a partial refund only if you cancel within 30 days.
Can I still use my Instant Ink cartridges after canceling?
Only until the end of your billing period. After that, HP disables them remotely and they won’t print, even if they still have ink.
Will my printer still work after I cancel Instant Ink?
Yes. The printer keeps working once you put in regular cartridges. Only the Instant Ink cartridges stop.
Does canceling Instant Ink remove HP+?
No. HP+ is separate, and HP says it can’t be undone once it’s on. A printer with HP+ needs original HP cartridges after you cancel.
Do I have to send the Instant Ink cartridges back?
HP asks you to return them for recycling, using its prepaid envelopes or the HP Planet Partners program. They’re HP’s property and won’t work in any other printer.
Can I pause Instant Ink instead of canceling?
HP offers a short pause on some monthly accounts, but not on yearly plans. You can also drop to the 10-page plan at $1.99 a month. Check what your account offers before you cancel.
